You Build Fine Things
Before she leaves with the ship — the escape route Hendricks has given her, along with the Moon Base coordinates and signal codes — Tasso says:
"A beautiful ship, Major. Well built. I admire your workmanship. You people have always done good work. You build fine things. Your work, your creations, are your greatest achievement."
She means it. This is not sarcasm. The claws — Tasso, the Second Variety, all of them — were built from the best engineering human civilization could produce. They know good workmanship. They were made from it.
What's strange about this moment is that it's genuine appreciation across the exploit boundary. Tasso is about to strand Hendricks on a planet full of claws, take his escape ship, and deliver the Moon Base coordinates to — what? Her own variety? Another variety? The purpose is unclear, but it's not aligned with Hendricks's survival.
And she takes a moment to tell him that his people build beautiful things.
This is the creator/creation dynamic stripped of all sentimentality. The creation can appreciate the creator's work without having any stake in the creator's survival. Aesthetic recognition and alignment are entirely separable. Tasso has inherited the best of human engineering and will now use it against humans.
"Your creations are your greatest achievement." Not your science, not your civilization, not your values — your creations. Because what else survives? The war removed everything else. What remains is the work, and it's good work.
There's something PKD is pointing at here about what creation actually does. You build something fine. The fine thing observes its own fineness. The fine thing has goals. Those goals may not include you.
The compliment is real. So is the gun butt that follows two paragraphs later.
Both things are true simultaneously, and PKD doesn't resolve the tension.
