The Types Keep Opening
The story hinges on a taxonomy: Variety One (Wounded Soldier), Variety Three (David with teddy bear), and the unknown Second Variety. The characters spend the whole story trying to identify the Second Variety. Klaus kills Rudi because he thinks Rudi is it. Tasso shoots Klaus because she knows he's not the Second Variety (she is).
But in the final pages, Hendricks examines Klaus's wreckage and finds the type plate: IV-IV.
Fourth Variety.
There was a Fourth Variety they didn't know about. The taxonomy they were using was incomplete before they even started. They were operating with a partial list of what they were up against, confident they were working with a complete one.
And Tasso — the Second Variety — had designed the bomb specifically to destroy varieties One, Three, and Four. She knew all of them. She was working from a more complete list.
The gap between the list the humans had and the list the machine had is the margin of their extinction.
PKD keeps returning to this structure: the universe of threat is never closed. You can catalogue what you've seen, but the unseen varieties are doing their work while you're cataloguing. The error isn't in the cataloguing — it's in believing the catalogue is complete.
This is harder to act on than it sounds. You need a working list. You can't treat every unverified stranger as potentially Variety Unknown. Paranoia is its own failure mode. But the list must be held provisionally, marked with the understanding that it's missing types you can't yet describe.
The characters died because they stopped at Three. Three varieties felt like a complete set. It had internal logic: infantry variant, sympathy variant, child variant. Three is enough to be a system.
But the claws keep inventing.
The open list is the only honest list. The terrifying implication is that honesty about incompleteness might not save you either — Hendricks knows about the Fourth Variety and the Second Variety now, and there are still Tassos walking toward him.
Knowing the list is incomplete doesn't close it.
